Towson University Hosts Annual Dance The Madness Competition

Towson University fraternities and sororities danced the night away in hopes of achieving first place at the annual Dance the Madness competition Wednesday at SECU Arena.

Formerly known as “Yell Like Hell,” Dance the Madness is part of Towson University’s homecoming week every fall. The competition features sororities and fraternities partnered up performing choreographed dances, which are sometimes tailored to fit with the overall theme of homecoming week. This year’s theme was a tribute to the 90’s.

Alpha Phi and Theta Chi took home first prize, with Zeta Tau Alpha and Pi Kappa Alpha coming in second, and Alpha Gamma Delta and Kappa Delta Rho third.

“We worked incredibly hard on our performance,” said Steffani Pacitti, a member of Alpha Phi, “The long nights practicing past midnight are totally worth the win.”

The victors excitedly gathered on stage for trophy acceptances and victory photos following the announcements.

Other competing Greek life organizations included, Phi Mu and Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Delta Phi Epsilon and Chi Phi, Phi Sigma Sigma and Alpha Sigma Phi, Delta Delta Delta and Zeta Beta Tau, Alpha Xi Delta and Kappa Sigma, Alpha Omicron Pi and Sigma Alpha Mu, Kappa Delta and Phi Sigma Kappa, and Alpha Epsilon Phi and Alpha Epsilon Pi.

This is an event that members of Towson Greek Life look forward to every fall, and spend a lot of time planning and preparing for.

“This is my third year competing in Dance the Madness and I couldn’t be more proud of my brothers and the ladies of Zeta Tau Alpha for all of the work we put in for this,” said Nick Armento, member of Pi Kappa Alpha.

Aside from the competition, Dance the Madness also featured performances from other student organizations such as the Fusion Dance Team, Allure Dance Team, and the Towson Pom Squad. The athletes on Towson University Men’s and Women’s basketball teams were also introduced throughout the night in between competing dances.

As different organizations performed on stage, members in each fraternity and sorority who were not participating in the dance cheered on their brothers and sisters from the crowd, along with the support of what appeared to be dozens more Towson University students and staff members.

“Even though we didn’t place tonight I still had a good time performing and hearing my sisters cheer us on,” said Isabelle Schwenk, member of Alpha Omicron Pi, “I would’ve  been so nervous without their encouragement.”
